I always have a song inside me. I don’t mean the ones I write. I mean I can hear music playing in my head all the time, and there’s no way to turn it off. This could drive lesser mortals mad, but I’ve survived and tap into this never-ending inner soundscape to fuel my many projects, including the Friday Happy Hour study sessions I broadcast live on Twitch most weeks — either from my home studio or at my summertime Ice Cream Happy Hour residency at our local farm stand (seriously local: it’s about three houses down from our house). My musical stylings owe a lot to the sounds... of various British Invasions — from the 1960s to the post-punk era — acts like the Beatles, Elvis Costello, The Jam, Billy Bragg, The Kinks, The Who, Squeeze, Pretenders, Blondie, The Clash, to name a bunch, as well as American acts like REM, X, Phil Ochs, Tom Petty, Fleetwood Mac, and Paul Simon, with stray bits of The Replacements tossed in for fun ’n chaos. I recently moved from Austin, Texas, where in previous times you could catch me strumming and warbling at my monthly residency at The Butterfly Bar or fronting three arse-kicking bands: the Brit-Pop tour de force that is The Late Joys, my novel psychedelic-alt-country-hillbilly-Americana-roots-rock-n-roll act The Bootleggers and power-folk duet The Study Session. Now, I’m in Glastonbury, Connecticut, where I plan to perform as much as possible, sometimes with my shiny new band, Mr. P’s Brit Pop Pop Persuasion.
